How to camp with your family...

How To Propose During A Camping Trip

Susan Nelson Hopkins

Wait! Are you sure both of you will be comfortable camping. If either of you are inexperienced campers, the proposal may actually compound the stress that many new campers experience.

After all, you want your sweetheart's undivided attention, and burning hamburgers, mosquitoes, and outdoor facilities can be formidable distractions.

If both of you are fairly experienced campers, go for it. But, if not... just rent a cabin in a more "civilized" setting and "camp" there. Either way, be sure to make reservations in advance. You can always pretend that it's a whim, or spur-of-the-moment thing. In fact, it might even add a bit of magic to your proposal.

Plan at least one special meal... the whole romance thing. If you're camping, just think how impressed your special person will be. Pack a prepared meal from a caterer or a really good restaurant. Serve chilled bubbly in goblets... You get the picture.

You can still do this if you decide on renting a cabin instead of camping. It will definitely have the same effect. Or, when you book the cabin, ask the owner about nearby restaurants. Give them a call and make arrangements for a special dinner. Believe me, restaurants do romance really well!

For the big moment, let the circumstances and your darling's preferences guide you.

What about putting the ring in a boot or glove, on top of a smores or the catered dessert. Anyplace unexpected will work (just don't lose it!). You could even get a little serious and go down on one knee as you propose.

I certainly don't have to tell you what a momentous step this. But, perhaps I've given you some ideas for making it special... and worth remembering. And, celebrating for many years to come!
